Our latest feature is an interview with Terry Dorn of Audio Research Corporation by our own Ken Gould. Terry answers questions about how Audio Research was started and gives us some background on their founder, William Johnson, and his design philosophies. Then Terry discusses how Audio Research designs and builds their highly-acclaimed power amplifiers, preamplifiers, and CD players and how Audio Research has remained preeminent in the high end electronics world for almost four decades. Finally, Terry talks about what's new at Audio Research, including a description of their newest product, a USB DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter).

During the interview, Terry uses some terms which we would like to define here for your convenience.

Power Supply

The section of an electronic component, usually consisting of a transformer, capacitor bank, and rectifier, which converts AC wall current into the DC voltages needed by that component

Output Transformer

The type of transformer used to couple the output tubes of a tube power amplifier to the loudspeakers

J-FET

Junction Field Effect Transistor, a type of solid state device with sonic characteristics resembling a tube
