NEW PRODUCTS

Pro-Ject

Pro-Ject has released a number of new turntable models during the past year. Three of the most exciting and interesting ones are the 2XPerience Primary Acrylic (with Ortofon 2M Red cartridge) at $999, The Classic (with Ortofon 2M Silver cartridge) at $1099, and The Classic SB (with Sumiko Blue Point No. 2 cartridge) at $1499.

Pro-Ject 2XPerience Primary Acrylic TurntableThe 2Xperience Primary Acrylic is an ultra-stylish record player that uses advanced technology for great sound. A quiet-running AC motor with a two-step pulley drives the platter's outside edge via a belt. The resonance-optimized MDF platter with an included screw down record clamp runs on a high-tolerance, stainless-steel axle with a Teflon bearing plate in a sintered bronze bearing housing. The transparent acrylic plinth stands on three height-adjustable, TPE vibration-damped, aluminum cones while an external power supply is used to avoid potential electro-mechanical interference. (TPE is a family of modern damping materials which can be tuned to damp resonances at specific frequencies.) The sophisticated 9-inch tonearm uses a one-piece, aluminum head shell & arm tube and an inverted bearing design with four hardened ball races. The solid arm base permits accurate height adjustment of the arm tube and, therefore, of VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle) for different phono cartridges. The internal wiring consists of flexible, high-purity copper from the head shell right through to the gold-plated phono sockets. A summary of its features is listed below:

  • Belt driven turntable with 2-speed (33 and 45 RPM) pulley
  • Stand-alone motor base for maximum vibration isolation
  • MDF platter with felt mat & record clamp
  • 9-inch aluminum tonearm with precision bearings
  • Audiophile-grade tonearm cable interconnect included
  • Available in four different transparent acrylic finishes: Clear, Blue, Green, and Orange

Pro-Ject Classic SB turntableThe Classic turntable uses a traditional suspended design which was established by the famous turntable manufacturers of the 50's and 60's. It has a compact, simple, and elegant form factor. The Classic uses a belt drive design with a low-noise AC motor driven by an ultra-precision frequency, DC to AC generator (like the stand-alone Speed Box) for ultimate speed stability. Advanced technology is used for decoupling of the newly-designed tonearm. While the sub-platter and main bearing are similar in design to that of the Debut, they use an improved, mirror-polished stainless steel spindle that rests within a Teflon-coated bronze bushing with much higher tolerances. Increasing the machining tolerances by a factor of ten allowed Pro-Ject to achieve whisper-quiet bearing operation. This translates into more accurate and realistic audio playback without any unwanted sound coloration or extraneous bearing noise. Another advantage The Classic has over its vintage predecessors is its precisely machined aluminum alloy platter. The cast platters previously used provided the mass necessary for consistent speed and low wow/flutter, but they all suffered from internal resonances that caused a ringing that would inevitably degrade the sound. The Classic's platter provides the same mass benefits while using a far more acoustically inert alloy that is then further damped by TPE. Some of The Classic's features include:

  • Belt drive with manual speed control (33/45 rpm)
  • Height-adjustable decoupling feet
  • Precisely balanced TPE-damped aluminum platter with felt mat
  • Metal/MDF sandwich plinth floating on TPE suspension
  • 9-inch carbon fiber/aluminum composite tonearm
  • Integrated central, vertical cable outlet for unhindered arm movement
  • Ultra-low-friction, Zircon, pin-point tonearm bearings (top & side)
  • Azimuth and VTA fully adjustable
  • TPE-damped counterweight
  • Classic wood chassis in 3 matte finishes (walnut, rosenut, and eucalyptus)
  • Dust cover included

To take The Classic to a higher level, Pro-Ject has augmented the design with several improvements to create The Classic SB. These include Electronic Speed Control, a Sumiko Blue Point No.2 cartridge, a Top-grade Clamp it record clamp, and a Leather It record mat. These upgrades are worth well over $600 but are packaged in The Classic SB for only $400 more than The Classic.
